Podgorica Airport to Kotor

How to get from Podgorica Airport (TGD) to Kotor: pre-booked private transfer, rental car with route notes, or the airport-and-intercity-bus route — with realistic timing cautions and a FAQ.

The short version
  • Podgorica (TGD) is Montenegro's capital airport — further from Kotor than Tivat, but stronger on year-round and longer-haul routes.
  • The drive crosses inland before dropping to the coast and the bay; allow noticeably more time than from Tivat, and more again in summer traffic.
  • A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest door-to-door option for the longer ride, especially after a long-haul or late flight.
  • Renting a car at the airport suits travellers continuing around the bay and mountains — but the Old Town is car-free, so plan to park outside the walls.
  • The budget route is a hop into Podgorica, then a frequent intercity coach to Kotor; cheap, but with a transfer and a longer journey.

The short answer: further than Tivat, so plan the time

Podgorica is Montenegro's main airport and the country's busiest by year-round connections, which is why many visitors land here even though Tivat is closer to the bay. The trade-off is distance: Kotor lies on the far side of a low mountain barrier from Podgorica, so the journey runs inland and then descends to the coast and around the bay — a longer trip than the short hop from Tivat, and one that stretches further in peak-summer coastal traffic. Treat any single drive-time figure as approximate and build in a buffer, especially for a tight onward plan or a last boat to catch.

There is no airport train and no direct airport-to-Kotor shuttle, so the choice is the same three options as elsewhere: a pre-booked private transfer (easiest for the longer ride), a rental car (best if your trip needs wheels), or the budget route through Podgorica's bus station and onward by intercity coach. Because the journey is longer here than from Tivat, comfort and reliability matter more — a fixed-price transfer with a driver waiting is often worth it after a long flight. Each option, with its catches, is below.

Private transfer (easiest for the longer ride)

Given the distance, a pre-booked private transfer is the most comfortable way from Podgorica to Kotor. You arrange it ahead, a driver meets you at arrivals with your name, and you are taken straight to your Kotor accommodation — no haggling at a rank, no working out connections after a long flight, and a fixed price agreed in advance. For families, groups, late arrivals or anyone with a lot of luggage, the certainty is worth the cost on a journey of this length. Airport taxis are also available, but on a longer trip the value gap between a metered taxi and a fixed-price transfer narrows, so confirm the price before you commit either way.

As always in Kotor, the Old Town is car-free, so the drop-off is at the nearest point a vehicle can reach — usually just outside the walls, a short walk from central lodgings. If you are staying along the bay in Dobrota, Muo, Prčanj or out at Perast, the transfer is genuinely door-to-door. Tell the driver your exact address when booking so they take the right approach.

  • Pre-booked transfer: fixed price, a driver at arrivals, straight to your door — best for the longer ride.
  • Metered taxis exist, but on a long trip confirm the fare; the gap to a fixed transfer is smaller than from Tivat.
  • Old Town stays get a drop just outside the car-free walls; bay-village stays are door-to-door.

Rental car and the intercity bus route

Renting at Podgorica is a strong choice if you intend to explore Montenegro — the capital is well placed for the interior, the Lovćen and Cetinje road, and the coast, and the desks are at the airport. The drive to Kotor takes you inland and then down to the bay; in summer the final coastal stretch is the slow part, so leave early or late to dodge the worst of it. The standing caveat applies: Kotor's Old Town is car-free, so you will park in the paid lots outside the walls, which fill in high season — factor that into where you stay and when you arrive.

The budget route uses public transport in two legs. From the airport you first reach Podgorica's main bus station — by a short taxi or local connection — and from there catch one of the frequent intercity coaches to Kotor, which run down to the coast and around to the bay. It is inexpensive and reliable in daylight, but it is the longest option door-to-door, involves a transfer, and thins out in the evening and off-season. It suits independent, lightly packed travellers more than a tired group arriving late at night; check the last departure before you rely on it.

  • Rental car: ideal if you'll tour Montenegro; park outside Kotor's car-free Old Town, and avoid peak coastal traffic.
  • Bus route: airport → Podgorica bus station (short hop) → frequent Kotor coach. Cheapest, but longest, with a transfer.
  • Evening and off-season schedules thin out — confirm the last connection in advance.
